How to track expenses with ChatGPT

To track expenses with ChatGPT, connect it to an expense tracker app such as Manilo, then tell ChatGPT what you spent and ask it for totals by month.

Manilo stores every expense as a transaction with its date, amount, account and category, and ChatGPT reads or changes those transactions when you ask. Can ChatGPT track your expenses? covers what goes wrong when a chat is the only record.

1. Connect ChatGPT to Manilo

Add the Manilo app inside ChatGPT, then sign in to your Manilo account when it asks. It is a one-time setup; connect ChatGPT has the steps, including a manual route for when the app does not open.

ChatGPT reads only what each request needs, and removing Manilo in ChatGPT’s settings ends that access at once; see privacy and your data.

2. Log an expense in ChatGPT

Type the purchase the way you would say it. “Coffee 4.50 on my card” becomes a transaction in one of the categories you already use. When you keep more than one account, name the one you paid from, as in “groceries 62 on the joint card”, and the entry is saved there.

Abroad, log the purchase on an account kept in that currency, such as a euro card, and your totals show it in your primary currency at the daily European Central Bank rate.

3. Import a bank statement into ChatGPT

Instead of logging each purchase, you can catch up on a whole month at once. Attach the PDF or CSV statement from your bank to a chat and ask ChatGPT to import it: each row goes into one of your categories in a single batch, and the reply links to your web dashboard. Import a statement by chat covers picking the account and fixing rows afterwards.

4. See your monthly spending in ChatGPT

Ask in plain words, for example “Show my spending by category for October next to September.” The answer counts every entry saved in Manilo, including ones you logged in the app or in another chat. You can ask about your budgets the same way.

5. Fix a wrong expense or balance in ChatGPT

Corrections take one sentence. “Move that lunch to Work” changes its category, and “the taxi on Tuesday was 23, not 32” fixes the amount. To check what went in, ask ChatGPT for this week’s entries.

An account balance can be checked the same way. If your bank shows a different figure, give ChatGPT that number and it brings the account in line with it.

Questions

Do I need a paid plan to track expenses with ChatGPT?

Tracking expenses through ChatGPT needs Manilo Cloud, the paid plan, at $5.99/month or $39.99/year after a 7-day free trial, and you can cancel any time. The Manilo iPhone app on its own is free with no ads, and plans and pricing compares the two.

Does the ChatGPT connection link to my bank account?

The connection signs ChatGPT in to your Manilo account and nothing else, since Manilo has no link to any bank. ChatGPT sees bank data only in a statement file you attach yourself, as import a statement by chat shows.

Do expenses I add in ChatGPT show up in the Manilo app?

Expenses added in ChatGPT sync to the Manilo iPhone app and the web dashboard. Connect ChatGPT explains signing in with the account your app already uses.
